- The Apostle’s Sarcasm: Pride Must Be Exposed
Paul confronts the Corinthians’ false sense of arrival. They viewed themselves as rich, wise, strong, and honored, but Paul uses sarcasm to reveal their spiritual conceit. Their attitude resembled Laodicea’s self-sufficiency and reminds believers that comfort, wealth, or influence are not reliable measures of spiritual maturity. - The Apostle’s Sufferings: Faithfulness Often Costs Something
Paul contrasts the Corinthians’ ease with the apostles’ hardship. The apostles were treated as fools, dishonored, hungry, thirsty, poorly clothed, mistreated, homeless, cursed, persecuted, and slandered. Yet they blessed, endured, and answered kindly. Christian faithfulness is measured not by worldly approval but by steadfast obedience to Christ. - The Apostle’s Sons and Daughters: Spiritual Children Need Faithful Examples
Paul writes not to shame the Corinthians but to warn them as beloved children. Though they had many instructors, Paul had become their spiritual father through the gospel. Believers should remember those God used to lead them to Christ and imitate the faithfulness of those whose lives point clearly to Jesus. - The Apostle’s Substitute: Timothy Reinforces the Example
Paul sends Timothy, his beloved and faithful son in the Lord, to remind the Corinthians of Paul’s way of life in Christ. Timothy’s ministry shows that faithful teaching and faithful living must agree, and that spiritual correction is an act of love.
Conclusion: To “flatter” a father in the faith is to imitate his faithfulness as he follows Christ. The Christian life may involve suffering, rejection, and sacrifice, but the promised reward is greater than present hardship. Believers can endure with confidence because everyone who trusts in Christ will never be put to shame.
